Umbilical Hernia

Umbilical hernias in the belly button frequently occur in infants. The majority of those will heal as the child grows without the need of an operation. However, surgical repair is occasionally necessary. When these hernias develop in adults they are often related to other health conditions like obesity, pregnancy, constipation, severe liver disease, or lung issues associated with chronic cough.

If you have developed pain and a bulge and you are unable to push the hernia back in the contents may be incarcerated through the defect. If there is compromise of the blood supply to this tissue it could be life-threatening if not addressed in a timely manner. Some symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, increasing pain, fever, abdominal distention, inability to pass gas, or red/purple discoloration of the overlying skin.  If you develop any of these signs or symptoms you will need emergency medical care.

These hernias tend to increase in size and surgical repair may be indicated.
In the past, patients required an open operation that resulted in significant scarring. Dr. Fiszer’s preference and specialty is to use minimally invasive techniques that allow him to perform the repair through very small incisions using either a camera or robot assistance. The advantages of this approach are substantial. There is an increase in the surgical precision due to the magnification by the camera. This significantly reduces potential bleeding and patients experience much less pain and are able to return to normal activities much sooner. With this technique the scars are virtually unnoticeable, providing excellent cosmetic results.
